After a few days of boats, beaches and desert trips, many travellers simply want some calm. A SPA visit is an enjoyable way to fill a free afternoon or a day you would rather stay on land. It also works well when not everyone in your group fancies another full-day excursion.

In Hurghada you will mostly come across three kinds of experience: the Turkish hammam, the Moroccan ritual and the classic relaxation massage. The names are sometimes used interchangeably, so this guide explains what you can usually expect, how they differ and how booking works with Harmony Tours.

Harmony SPA & Wellness programs are available in Hurghada only. They are operated by our SPA partner, and Harmony Tours handles your booking, payment and customer support.

Turkish hammam: what is it?

A hammam is a traditional steam bath with a long history in the Middle East. Warmth, steam and cleansing the skin are at the heart of the ritual. It varies from place to place, but usually follows a few stages:

  • Warming up in the bath, as the steam and heat help you settle.
  • A body scrub with a special mitt, which removes dead skin.
  • A foam massage, one of the most distinctive moments of a hammam.
  • Quiet time to rest at the end, before you carry on with your day.

Our Classic Turkish Hammam & SPA combines a body scrub and foam massage with a jacuzzi and drink, a 45-minute massage and a face mask. The whole program takes 1.5 hours.

Moroccan hammam: how is it different?

The Moroccan ritual also centres on steam and cleansing, but it has a slightly different character. It is traditionally associated with a Moroccan exfoliating mitt, or loofah, and with clay as its own stage of the treatment. If the Turkish hammam brings foam to mind, the Moroccan one is mainly about the mitt and the clay.

Our Moroccan Hammam Ritual includes a steam bath, a Moroccan bath with Moroccan loofah, a Moroccan clay treatment, body conditioning, a jacuzzi, a drink and a 60-minute massage. It takes 2 hours, so it suits a calmer part of your day.

Relaxing massages on holiday

A relaxation massage is the simplest choice if you do not want a full bath ritual. Calm, flowing movements across the whole body make a welcome pause between busy days. It is also easy to fit into a holiday plan, because it takes less time than the longer SPA programs.

Our Relaxing Full Body Massage lasts 60 minutes. Think of it as a treat and a rest rather than a treatment: the massages in this article are not a medical service or therapy.

Which SPA program should you choose?

The easiest place to start is how much time you want to spend, and whether you want a massage alone or a full bath ritual.

When you have less time

The Relaxing Full Body Massage is the shortest and simplest option. It suits you if you want to unwind without spending half the day away from your hotel, or if you would rather skip the steam bath.

When you want to try a classic hammam

The Classic Turkish Hammam & SPA is a good start if you have never been to a hammam. The scrub and foam massage show you what the ritual is about, and the jacuzzi, 45-minute massage and face mask complete the visit.

When you want something different

The Moroccan Hammam Ritual will interest you if you would like to try a treatment with clay and a Moroccan loofah. The Private Luxury SPA Experience is the longest at 2.5 hours and combines the most elements: Turkish bath, sauna, steam bath, scrub, foam massage, full-body mask, jacuzzi, a 60-minute massage and a drink.

When should you plan a SPA visit?

You choose your time from the available appointments when you book. Many people prefer a day without an early start, such as the day after a full-day cruise or desert trip. It is worth booking ahead, because an appointment must be at least 12 hours after you book.

Allow for travel time too. If you are staying outside Hurghada, for example in Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay or El Gouna, plan for a longer transfer and check the pickup surcharge before you pay.
