Few holidays end without the question of what to take home. Egypt makes it an easy one: its cosmetics, oils, sweets, teas and handicrafts are a real taste of the country, and many of them make good gifts.

This guide covers the most popular things to buy, what to look out for, and how to get some of them without leaving your hotel. Harmony Shop, the online shop from Harmony Tours, lists more than 200 products and delivers to hotels in Hurghada, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay. We add new products regularly, so check the shop for the current range.

Our picks: Vatika shampoo, hair mayonnaise and Eva cosmetics

If you only have room for a few things, start with hair and skin care. These are the products we would point you to first, and each one can be delivered to your hotel.

Vatika shampoo and hair mask

Our hair care category has a wide choice of Dabur Vatika shampoos, many in more than one size. Two black seed products to look at are the Strength & Shine shampoo and the Black Seed Hammam Cream, a conditioning hair mask from the Vatika Complete Hair Protection line.

Vatika hair mayonnaise

Despite the name, this is not food. Hair Mayonnaise is a Vatika Naturals range of hair masks. Repair & Restore contains honey, castor and marrow extracts, while Hair Fall Control contains cactus, garlic and ghergir extracts. Follow the directions on the jar.

Eva cosmetics

Eva Skin Clinic is an Egyptian brand, and our face care category includes its creams, serums and cleansers. Examples are Gold Collagen Cream, a face cream in a jar, a hyaluronic acid serum for facial hydration, a Gold Collagen facial serum and a rose water face tonic.

Camel milk cosmetics

Camel milk lotions are one of the more unusual things to take home, and a nice change from what you find in the shops back home. Look at the size, the scent and the other ingredients, since formulas vary from one brand to another.

In our cosmetics category you will find, for example, a moisturising Orgakera lotion with camel milk and black seed oil, finished with a soft vanilla scent, and a Tnerh body lotion in a practical pump bottle for everyday use, including after a shower or a day in the sun.

Natural oils and perfumes

Natural oils are a classic Egyptian purchase. Our natural oils category includes Lotus coconut and black seed oils for hair and skin care, as well as rose, jasmine, peppermint and frankincense oils. Read each product's label and description before use, because the intended use and any warnings differ from one oil to another.

Egypt is also known for perfume oils and essences sold in bazaars. Try a scent on your skin before you buy, ask what it contains and compare a few prices.

Tea, coffee, hibiscus and spices

Tea is part of everyday life in Egypt, and a pack of local tea or coffee is a light, inexpensive gift. Harmony Shop's tea and coffee category includes classic El Arosa loose black tea and Abu Auf flavoured coffee.

Dried hibiscus, known locally as karkade, and spices are also traditional purchases, usually found in markets and spice shops. If you plan to fly with them, check that the packaging is well sealed.

Halawa, dates and other sweets

If you want a gift that tastes of Egypt, start with sweets. Sesame halawa is ready to eat and works for breakfast, with bread or as a snack, while dates come plain, stuffed or covered in chocolate. Our sweets and dates category includes hazelnut halawa and Medjool dates in dark chocolate with almonds. Keep the heat in mind: chocolate is best left out of the sun on the way home.

Classic souvenirs

Papyrus, alabaster, cotton textiles and small handmade pieces are the souvenirs many visitors look for. You will find them in local shops and markets. Agree on a price before you pay, look closely at the quality, and ask for a receipt for anything of higher value.

Before you pack

Liquid limits usually apply to hand luggage, so bigger bottles of lotion and oil are generally better in your checked bag, wrapped well. Rules on bringing food home depend on your destination, so check them for your country and with your airline before you fly.
